Why communication is important

Why Communication is Important at Short Breaks

At Short Breaks, we know that communication is very important. It helps children and young people tell us what they want, how they feel, and what they need. Some young people might not use spoken words, and that’s okay. We use different ways to help everyone communicate, like PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), communication boards, Signalong, AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), or any other way that works best for them.

We want everyone to feel safe, happy, and understood. That’s why we work closely with parents, carers, and schools. We share ideas and information so we all use the same ways to communicate. This helps children and young people feel comfortable, because they see and hear the same messages at home, at school, and at Short Breaks.

Our staff are trained to listen carefully and to use each young person’s preferred way of communicating. We use pictures, signs, symbols, and objects to help them understand what is happening and to help them make choices. Good communication helps young people feel more confident, join in activities, and enjoy their time with us. It also helps build friendships and trust with staff and other children.
